Raon slowly closed his eyes.
‘It’s starting to spread.’
He could feel Chamber’s energy, blooming from the necklace Rensia wore, flowing toward the artifacts that formed the pentagram.
“Mm….”
After checking her own body, Rensia blinked her green eyes.
“The pain isn’t too bad. I can handle it!”
She touched the black heart protruding from her waist and smiled.
“It’s fine for now, but it’ll get worse soon.”
Raon shook his head with a bitter look. Right now, it was bearable because the mana was still spreading, but once the pentagram connected, she would feel excruciating pain.
“It’s okay! I can endure anything! Because we’re together.”
She squeezed his hand and gave him a soft smile, as if steeling herself by thinking of her siblings.
“Rensia….”
Hearing her words, Runaan pressed her lips tightly together.
“That little kid’s about to make me cry.”
Martha’s brows furrowed as she looked at her.
– “From now on, I’ll call her the Little Old Lady!”
Wrath decided on her new nickname and smacked his lips.
‘It fits, but she’ll hate it.’
Raon shook his head.
– “Hmph. If I’ve decided it, that’s final.”
Wrath snorted.
– “The mana’s moving quickly.”
He rolled his eyes, noting the faster-than-expected flow.
– “High-level magic for something made in a hurry.”
‘It was crafted by an archmage and her disciples, working through the night.’
Montiro, befitting a tourist city, was vast.
To quickly encompass its land and sea with the magic circle, Chamber and the Balkan magicians had worked without sleep.
– “I’m looking forward to it.”
Wrath smacked his lips at the thought.
– “The sight of those foul things who defile demonic energy crumbling to dust.”
His blue eyes flashed with lingering rage toward the Black Tower.
‘Same here.’
Raon nodded calmly.
‘I want to destroy them without leaving a single trace.’
He believed there were people of honor among the Five Divine Order, like the Axe King of the North-South Union or the elders of the Holy Sword Alliance.
But the Black Tower and Derus Robert were exceptions.
They were fiends who had abandoned their humanity, soaked in the word “Mara.”
None of them needed to be spared.
– “It seems your anger has ripened.”
Wrath smiled faintly in approval.
‘From the beginning….’
Raon stopped himself from speaking Derus’ name and turned his gaze to the right.
‘It’s reached the corners now.’
He could feel Chamber’s mana, sent from Montiro’s center, connecting with the artifacts that formed the pentagram. Now it was truly starting.
“Ugh….”
Rensia began to feel the pain, bowing her head and biting her lip.
“Hold on a little longer.”
Raon channeled Glacier’s frost into her. Using the cold to dull her pain, he pressed against the black heart.
‘This isn’t easy.’
He had to stabilize the magic circle’s core while also caring for her. If someone disturbed it, she would cough blood and collapse.
– “Will you really be fine?”
Wrath narrowed his eyes.
‘Yes.’
Raon nodded without hesitation, smiling faintly at Runaan and Martha opposite him.
‘The ice cream girl and the beef girl you like so much will guard us.’
—
“Rensia….”
Martha bit her lip hard as she watched Rensia endure the agony.
‘She reminds me of when I was young.’
When the White Blood Cult slaughtered her village and kidnapped her mother, she thought she was alone in the world.
Weak and small, she had fought desperately, killing low-level blood fiends with a blade clenched in her teeth.
If she hadn’t met her father when she was on the brink of death, she would have become a blood fiend or been eaten by one.
‘No… Rensia’s had it worse.’
Martha had been rescued younger than Rensia and brought to Zieghart. Though she’d worried for her mother, her life afterward had been safe and comfortable.
But Rensia had lived with nothing but pain, without help from anyone, caring for siblings not bound by blood, forcing herself to smile.
The thought made Martha’s chest ache as if torn.
“Hey.”
She jerked her chin toward Runaan while sitting on the bench beside the fountain.
“You’re thinking the same thing, right?”
“Probably….”
Runaan nodded heavily, watching Rensia’s trembling body.
‘She’s braver than me….’
Much braver.
Runaan had been trapped in Syria’s grasp for over ten years, never even thinking of escaping the cage she was in.
If Raon hadn’t appeared to open that cage, she wouldn’t have tried to leave even now.
Like her, Rensia had been under the Black Tower’s claw from birth, suffering all her life.
But she never gave up, protecting her siblings and thinking of others first, never losing her kindness.
She was far braver than Runaan, who had given up and stayed caged.
‘I’ll protect her.’
She wanted Rensia to smile the innocent smile of her age, not a false one. Even if Runaan still found smiling awkward herself.
“Let’s do it.”
Runaan clenched her fist with Raon and Rensia behind her.
“No matter what.”
“Of course.”
Martha raised her fist.
Thump.
Runaan nodded and held out a “cloth” to meet Martha’s fist.
“I win….”
“You little—!”
—
Raon slowly opened his eyes.
‘It’s going smoothly.’
With Rensia as the core, the pentagram’s magic circle was shifting Montiro’s mana flow.
– “Demonic energy is starting to appear.”
Wrath nodded, finally sensing it in Montiro.
‘Yeah. Deathly energy too.’
The deathly energy that hadn’t existed here before was rising from beneath the ground.
It meant a crack had formed in the magic circle connecting Montiro and the Black Tower.
Looking at Rensia’s necklace, he saw the clear gem was one-third filled with flame.
In forty minutes, the dimensional gate to the Black Tower would open here.
“Hnn…”
Her lip was caught deeper between her teeth—the pain had grown worse.
‘It’s hard, but she has to endure.’
If Chamber herself had said it was painful, then it was brutal for an untrained child.
He added Garunua’s wind to Glacier’s frost to lessen her pain.
“Haa….”
She let out a low breath, bending at the waist.
“You’ve done well. Now… hm?”
Praising her, he turned his gaze sharply.
– “They’re moving.”
‘Already….’
Only 26 minutes had passed, but he could feel movement all over Montiro.
It seemed demons with keen senses or strong power had begun to act.
‘That means they’re stronger than we thought.’
Chamber had estimated the Black Tower’s demons would notice the magic’s disturbance in 30 minutes.
Realizing it four minutes sooner meant they were more formidable than expected.
‘So they’ll try contacting the Black Tower, find the link severed around the 28-minute mark, and the fighting will start at 30.’
Kwooong!
Boom!
When the flame in Rensia’s necklace reached about halfway, shockwaves and explosions erupted across Montiro.
The battle—no, the war—had begun.
Ssshhk.
Martha and Runaan drew their swords from subspace, taking positions before and behind Raon and Rensia.
“Ugh!”
“What the—?!”
“Is it war?”
“What’s going on?!”
The residents and tourists were bewildered, darting their eyes about.
“You’d best leave.”
“Head for the mountains….”
Martha and Runaan pointed out the prepared evacuation spots.
Raon watched them guiding the people away, then narrowed his eyes.
‘They’ve engaged.’
He could feel the swordsmen guarding the pentagram’s points clashing with the Black Tower’s demons.
They were all at least Master-class, with some Grand Master-level among the demons.
‘At least none are coming here.’
Once the magic circle activated, the artifacts forming the pentagram emitted stronger energy than the core, drawing the demons away.
‘Faster than expected, but nothing major.’
The Light Wind and True Martial swordsmen, hidden among the tourists, ambushed the demons.
The demons had moved sooner than expected, but the prepared defenses let them dominate the skirmishes.
‘If we can just buy time….’
– “That won’t be easy.”
Wrath snorted and pointed.
Ssshh.
From that direction came a white-haired man with a greatsword on his shoulder and a tall man planting a long spear into the ground.
“So this is it. Rensia is the core.”
Kalop, one of Montiro’s “heroes,” smirked.
“Even after watching your sister dissolve in demonic energy, you do this? Foolish.”
Felix, also a “hero” and the one who implanted the black hearts, shook his head down at her.
“Ugh….”
Rensia’s small shoulders trembled before them.
“It’s okay.”
Raon squeezed her trembling hand.
“Let’s trust the pretty big sisters.”
—
Martha narrowed her eyes at the approaching Felix and Kalop.
‘They’re as strong as I heard.’
From black market intel, she knew they were top-tier Masters—her own level.
But that was just what could be seen. Who knew how much more they were hiding?
“Do it as usual….”
Runaan nodded, telling her to fight her own fight without wavering.
“I know!”
Martha snorted. Normally irritating, but dependable when standing behind her.
“No need for words. Kill them.”
Kalop leveled his greatsword, and black monsters like shadows burst forth behind him.
Chiiiing!
Their ruby-like eyes flashed as they charged Raon and Rensia.
Thump!
Just as their yellow fangs lunged at Raon, tourists near the fountain all drew swords.
Slash!
It was the 1st Squad of the Light Wind. They pounced, cutting down the monsters.
Before the radiant aura of Masters, the creatures melted without a trace.
“Zieghart’s Light Wind Palace? Well prepared.”
Kalop frowned at their insignia.
“Do you know what you’re doing? It’s no different from summoning the Demon Realm here.”
He scoffed.
“Kalop. Don’t waste your breath.”
Felix scraped his spear shaft along the ground.
“Rensia. I thought you were someone who knew gratitude, but you’re worse than a dog.”
He glared at her as she squinted against the pain.
“If you want to follow your sister into death, so be it. I’ll melt your flesh and bones in demonic energy.”
He exuded killing intent to scare her into stopping the magic.
“Ahh….”
Her trembling worsened, tears falling.
“It’s okay.”
Raon squeezed her hand and smiled.
“Don’t cry! We’ll stomp that lanky bastard.”
Martha smashed the ground and swung at Felix. Titan Aura’s heaviness rose from her blade.
Kwooom!
Even blocking, Felix’s ankles sank into the earth.
“Kalop.”
Felix’s hand on his spear trembled.
“I know!”
Kalop dashed at the fountain, his greatsword falling toward Rensia’s head—
Crash!
—but was stopped mid-swing by a wall of silver ice.
“If you target her, your head will shatter.”
Runaan stomped, silver flooding the ground to freeze his lower body.
“Zieghart’s Rakshasa and Blue Moon Sword, huh.”
Kalop nodded.
“This isn’t easy. They’re top-tier Masters.”
He gestured to Felix.
“Agreed. Their skill is beyond what I heard….”
Felix groaned as Martha pushed him back.
“Release your demonic energy.”
“Should’ve done that from the start!”
At once, black wings sprouted from Felix’s back, and a black horn rose from Kalop’s forehead.
Their power spiked, burning the surrounding mana black—a Grand Master’s might.
Rumble!
Martha was knocked back, and Runaan’s frost shattered like dry leaves.
“Let’s end this quickly.”
Mana gathered at Kalop’s blade tip into a huge sphere—evidence of a Grand Master’s ‘aura’.
“Mm….”
Runaan tried to block with an ice wall but was forced back.
Crack!
Felix’s spear shaft was wreathed in black flame as he pressed Martha.
“Tch!”
She had to focus on defense, batting the flames aside.
“Not getting up?”
Felix tilted his head at Raon.
“Why would I?”
Raon opened his eyes slowly, smirking.
“Your beloved subordinates will die if you stay there.”
Felix’s strike nicked Martha’s waist.
“No, they won’t.”
Raon spoke with certainty, as if seeing the future.
“Ah, you can’t get up.”
Felix licked his lips.
“A chance to kill a transcendent.”
His black flames grew darker.
“Even if I could get up, I’d leave this fight to them.”
Raon shook his head calmly.
“It’d be a waste for them to fall to the likes of you.”
He smiled faintly at Martha and Runaan’s backs.
“You trust those women with your life?”
Kalop scoffed.
“It’s not trust.”
Raon shook his head.
“It’s just the truth.”
“You sure know how to talk!”
Moved, Martha shoved Felix’s spear back.
“My chest is warm….”
Runaan wound her ice into an octagon to form a shield against Kalop’s aura.
Hummm.
Their eyes shone steadily, unbending before the strong.
Fwoosh!
Feeling their master’s will to win, the blades they held began to burn with clear radiance.
(T/N: I’m so psyched! For the first time in a very long time we will get to see Runaan and Martha fight! I hope we see the others too! Finally, it’s not going to be a Raon show!)
