He merely looked like a handsome merchant, but the man was wrapped in an absolute aura that even Transcendents could not possess. When Raon Zieghart met the golden eyes that revealed a being’s desires, a fear and tension that felt as if his heart would burst washed over him.
‘The Monarch of Greed….’
Raon Zieghart pressed his lips tightly as he stared at the young man with black hair and golden eyes.
‘Why is this bastard here?’
The man who looked like a wealthy merchant was the Monarch of Greed who had descended upon the Supere Kingdom.
Seeing the monocle that reflects one’s root and the neatly ironed shirt, Raon Zieghart recalled the overwhelming force Greed had displayed back then.
‘This is dangerous.’
Greed was a Demon King whom Wrath acknowledged as a worthy opponent. He ranked among the very top of the Devildom’s rulers, so even if the “current” Wrath and Chamber were at full strength they wouldn’t be able to win.
But now Raon Zieghart could barely move a finger, and Chamber was using magic up to the brink of death to receive treatment from Saint Olga.
Karoon, too, had exhausted himself holding off the Black King Sigel and the high-ranked fiends alone. There was no chance of winning in a fight.
– “I hoped you wouldn’t show up….”
Wrath frowned deeply as he looked at Greed.
– “That gold-plated bastard really is connected to this tower, after all.”
‘What are you talking about?’
Raon Zieghart glanced with his eyes at Wrath.
– “Wasn’t there someone before who claimed to belong to this tower and tried to kill you and my subordinates? Someone who made me come out in person.”
‘The Flame Demon General Orgos?’
– “I don’t know the name. Anyway, when I fought that one, I smelled Greed’s stench. When I entered here I smelled money, so I suspected, and it seems I was right.”
Wrath clicked his tongue shortly, saying Greed seemed to have fostered the Black Tower.
‘…I don’t remember.’
Raon Zieghart knit his brows. Since he couldn’t remember, it seemed those words must have been said while he was unconscious.
‘No, whatever it was, it’s not important right now.’
Now that Greed had shown himself, whether this place belonged to his faction or not didn’t matter. The priority was finding a way out.
Kwadadaduk!
Greed tore open the Devildom gate frozen by his own power and walked out of the dimension.
When their eyes met, an eerie chill crawled up to his throat as if death had arrived. The presence was so overwhelming Raon Zieghart felt his very soul twist.
‘Of all people, him….’
If Envy had appeared instead, there might have been a way to deceive him, but deceiving Greed was impossible.
‘Because of that monocle.’
The monocle Greed wore was a special artifact that revealed the essence of a being.
Unlike other Demon Kings, Greed could tell through that monocle that Raon was not Wrath, so Wrath could not act.
“Again you.”
Greed lifted the monocle slightly and twisted his mouth.
“Wrath’s vessel.”
Though he spoke as the Monarch of Wrath, he did not think Raon was Wrath and called him a vessel.
Just hearing his displeased voice made Wrath wince as if pricked by needles.
– “No matter how much you try, deceiving that gold-plated freak is impossible.”
Wrath snorted at him.
– “Not just the monocle. The very idea that I would be reduced to this state by that worm is absurd.”
He shook his head, saying this time the act wouldn’t work.
– “Besides, even if you summoned me, it wouldn’t be easy to push him back.”
Wrath lowered his brows, saying the situation was bad.
– “Your mind and body are both broken right now, so even if I descended, I couldn’t exert my full strength. Of course, my own force isn’t normal either….”
He sighed, calling the situation the worst.
‘No, this might actually be for the best.’
– “What?”
Wrath’s blue eyes widened as if wondering what he meant.
‘If he accepts you as a vessel, then act as a vessel. It’s not because he underestimates you.’
If Greed believed Raon was Wrath, that would be worse — it would reveal Wrath’s weakness. Being judged merely a vessel was preferable.
‘It’s best if you don’t come out today and we push Greed away.’
Since Wrath’s body and mind were damaged, summoning him would put far more shock on his soul. His previous wounds weren’t fully healed; Raon didn’t want to burden him more.
‘I have a plan, but I don’t know if it will work.’
A method to drive Greed away had come to mind, but it required certain conditions. If the attempt failed, things would become truly dangerous.
‘For now, I have to buy time.’
Raon Zieghart began preliminary work to escape and slowly steadied his breathing.
“As I thought, this place belongs to your faction.”
Suppressing his trembling heart with the power of the ring of fire, Raon Zieghart met Greed’s gaze.
“Did you know?”
Greed narrowed his eyes as if surprised.
“The Monarch of Wrath once said that your stench has always flowed through this land. He frowned at the filthy smell of money.”
Raon Zieghart fed Greed a lightly altered version of Wrath’s words.
– “Huh?”
Wrath opened his eyes wide in surprise at his own words.
– “What are you planning now….”
He trembled at being flustered.
“You pretended to be Wrath before, but have you given up now?”
Greed squinted, trying to grasp Raon’s intention.
“It seems you can’t summon him in that state?”
“Of course not.”
Raon Zieghart shook his head with a peaceful expression.
“He sees and feels everything. He simply believes you’re not worth confronting.”
Raon elevated Wrath’s reputation and bowed with elegant composure.
– “W-why are you all of a sudden praising me! What are you trying to do? This is unsettling!”
Wrath leaped and shook his head.
[‘Even standing before such a monster without trembling! You really are my master!’]
Zircon nodded greatly as if in admiration.
– “Shut up!”
Wrath smacked Zircon across the back of the head in displeasure.
[‘Ugh….’]
Zircon now rubbed the raised spot on his head and lowered it.
‘As expected…’
Raon Zieghart exhaled deeply inward and clenched his fist.
‘Greed doesn’t want to deal with Wrath.’
If Greed had no reservations, Raon’s head would have been severed or his body torn before he even stepped out of the gate.
But Greed spoke first to gauge the situation. That meant he was wary of Wrath, not willing to take unnecessary risks.
‘Just as I expected. If I keep pressuring his psyche, I can force him back.’
As befits the Monarch of Greed, he seemed to have the psychology of a merchant.
If he could be made to realize that fighting Wrath would be a loss, he might withdraw on his own.
“He watches and feels everything? That stupid bastard?”
Greed scoffed in disbelief.
“He simply mastered everything. He doesn’t need rituals or incantations. Where he goes is the way.”
Wrath explained that he didn’t know much about spells or shamanic methods and used his strength instinctively. He phrased it with respect to further provoke Greed.
“Hmm….”
Greed frowned as if sensing something from Wrath’s words.
– “Hearing such praise for me makes my limbs cringe! There’s no sincerity at all!”
Wrath snapped that if he was going to say things like that, he should at least put a drop of sincerity into them.
‘Not for you. Don’t mind it.’
Unlike Wrath, Raon Zieghart seemed satisfied that his words had hit Greed.
– “No, you praised me! Don’t tell me it wasn’t directed at him!”
Wrath ground his teeth in disbelief, but Raon avoided looking over lest he lose focus.
“Did you raise the Black Tower Lord as a vessel?”
Raon Zieghart tilted his head while looking into the Black Tower Lord’s golden eyes.
“Raise? Vessel?”
Greed snorted contemptuously.
“Impossible. He’s merely one of my partners.”
He calmly shook his head, saying the Black Tower Lord was neither his vessel nor something he had raised.
“A human was raised by ‘that one’…”
Greed frowned as if recalling something not meant for him.
“That one?”
“Don’t you know? Seems your master didn’t tell you everything.”
He curled his lips mockingly.
“The Monarch of Wrath doesn’t concern himself with trifles. He simply accepts all.”
Raon Zieghart straightened his back while looking Greed in the golden eyes.
“If you have complaints, come at me. The Monarch of Wrath says he would come out right now.”
He pitched the gauntlet with his chin raised.
“Hmm….”
Greed’s calm eyes opened as if trying to read Raon’s thoughts.
—
“What the hell is that….”
Karoon’s jaw trembled as he looked at the black-haired, golden-eyed youth standing before the Devildom gate.
‘How can such a monster…’
Even the Demonic Energy of the Black Tower Lord was horrifying, but the presence above him surpassed that.
Just seeing him made the air constrict and souls feel crushed. It felt as if this world itself was in the palm of the man’s hand.
“Ugh….”
“Ugh….”
“Aaah!”
The absolute authority that the black-haired, golden-eyed youth emanated made the swordsmen of the Light Wind Palace and the Iron Division gasp and fall to their knees. Many fainted from the overwhelming difference in rank.
“This bastard again!”
“Damn. I can’t breathe….”
“Ugh….”
Martha, Burren, Runaan and the other Grand Masters barely held themselves up, but even they wouldn’t last long.
‘He’s definitely a fiend.’
And at Demon King level.
Most people think that Demonic Energy is countered by holy power, but sometimes Demonic Energy is itself the antithesis of holiness.
Judging by how paladins immediately fainted, this man was at least Demon King rank.
The one relief was that Saint Olga hadn’t fainted and was healing Chamber. If she had fainted too, things would have been dire, so that was a small comfort.
‘Comfort? Relief?’
Was that really the right word?
Chamber had fainted, and neither Raon could exert even half of their true strength. There was no way to stop this fiend.
‘Even if we were at full strength it’d be impossible.’
Short of Glenn’s arrival, no one could face this rank. The word despair, long forgotten, painted itself in his mind.
‘What should we do… hm?’
Karoon glanced around trying to save the children and saw Raon. Even before him, Raon stood unbowed and conversed with the great fiend.
Even from a distance the man’s authority made hands tremble; yet Raon didn’t cower despite his exhaustion.
‘Is he stalling for time?’
It seemed Raon Zieghart was drawing the fiend’s attention to himself to buy time for others to get out.
“Saint.”
Karoon grabbed Saint Olga’s trembling shoulder and nodded.
“Get out of here as quickly as possible.”
He entrusted Chamber to her and ordered the others to move outside as fast as they could.
‘Raon…’
Karoon raised his sword hand while watching Raon stand unwavering.
‘At least I won’t let you die alone.’
—
“Hmm.”
Greed licked his lips briefly as he looked at Raon.
“…….”
Raon Zieghart raised a finger while receiving Greed’s blatant gaze.
‘He’s sizing me up.’
No — he was sizing up Wrath.
Greed had once dismissed Wrath but had suffered many losses when Wrath suddenly struck, spending hundreds of millions in gold and being gravely injured. He seemed more cautious now.
‘I must show continuously that Wrath is still strong.’
Frankly, Raon’s body and mind were both so damaged that [Wrath’s Descent] might be impossible.
But Greed didn’t know that. Raon planned to use that informational gap to create a situation where Greed would withdraw of his own accord.
“What is Wrath doing now?”
Greed tilted his head and rolled his eyes.
“He said he wants to smash that sleazy face.”
Raon nodded after glancing at Wrath.
– “When did I! Still, good line! That face really sucks!”
Wrath approved of the comment.
– “But are you sure about this?”
He clicked his tongue.
‘Sure about what?’
– “You seem to think Greed is just a merchant, and sure, he acts like one. But at his core, he’s a fiend. The greediest one in the entire Devildom.”
Wrath warned that thinking too simply would be dangerous.
“Actually….”
Greed looked at the destroyed Black Tower and the corpses of the fiends beneath it and licked his lips slowly.
“Now that the war is over, and with Wrath behind you, starting a fight here isn’t a good idea. Even if I killed everyone and avoided Wrath, the flow wouldn’t return.”
He made a merchantlike assessment, waving his hand.
“But still…”
Greed’s eyes flashed like lightning splitting the night sky.
“You tempt me.”
“What?”
“When I saw you in Supere, not much time had passed, but you’ve grown this much. Even if you’re Wrath’s vessel, it doesn’t make sense how fast you’ve developed.”
The word “desire” burned visibly over his golden pupils.
“Even if I risk Wrath’s fury, you might be worth investing in.”
Greed let out a grotesque laugh and reached out his hand.
– “Bow your head!”
‘Ah…’
Wrath told him to bow, but he couldn’t avoid it. Greed’s gesture didn’t move fast, nor slow, but carried an overwhelming flow that Raon couldn’t dodge even in a perfect state.
‘Damn it…’
No matter how he moved, that hand couldn’t be avoided. It felt like Greed already had his soul in his grasp.
– “You fool!”
Wrath gritted his teeth and prepared to come out, but just then a fragrant, almost spine-chilling scent drifted in with the wind like a blooming flower.
And then, like fruit syrup over ice cream, a sweet scent followed.
Kwaaaaaang!
Suddenly, a woman with pink hair and a silver-haired girl sprang up in front of Raon and deflected Greed’s hand.
“You two….”
Greed frowned at the women who stood protectively before Raon.
“You remembered me.”
The pink-haired woman turned her back to him without even acknowledging him. Her pink eyes rippled softly. It was Lust.
“You added my Authority to your technique. I could die happy now.”
Lust smiled with indescribable joy.
“Money…”
The white-haired girl stuck a finger in her mouth and tugged at her sleeve. It was Gluttony.
“It’s all gone…”
Gluttony blinked her red eyes, saying she needed money for ice cream again.
– “Gyaaaaaaaaah!”
The moment Wrath saw Lust, he forgot about stopping Greed and stumbled back screaming.
‘Didn’t expect both of them to show up…’
Raon Zieghart looked between Gluttony and Lust and curled his lips.
‘At this rate…’
He might just be able to take Greed’s power.
