Asher stayed silent at the system’s words. He knew it had been his greedy side talking, but... wasn’t everything filled with danger? Didn’t the Wargraves know they were going to be attacked and still boarded the Sky Jet and flew home without a shred of hesitation?Power was filled with danger; if he backed down, wouldn’t he back down next time? He had never been the type to retreat merely because something was dangerous, especially when the path ahead promised strength capable of changing his understanding of power.
With his ridiculous intelligence, couldn’t he find a way to bypass this? His brain and intelligence had hardly ever failed him both in his past life as Ethan and now as Asher. Why would it fail him if he walked this path? The reward was worth the risk... right?
As these thoughts flooded his mind, he immediately shook his head as though to end the greedy and deathly thoughts that plagued his mind.
’I might really be the Sinvaira of Greed as the system has said earlier,’ Asher mused to himself internally as his hunger for the power seemed too intense.
’The system has given the condition to use the power again,’ Asher thought to himself, there was a clear path, there was no need to risk it all diving into an unknown path.
Although he would have to achieve Perfect Elemental Control on two affinities to be able to unleash it, and it also seemed like a difficult task, Asher wasn’t worried. He remembered the system promising him Perfect Elemental Control on another element if he could achieve one by himself.
Of course, he didn’t know if the system was joking as the system played too much these days, but when that day came, he would press the system until the system coughed up the reward.
But alas, only the stars knew how the system would be by then, it had grown cheeky after being with Asher for a year, who knows if it would become shameless in the long run and deny such claims.
Asher couldn’t help but suspect that the system already knew about the power of Elemental Combination, which was why it talked about the Perfect Elemental Control back then. The next moment, he shook his head and decided not to think about it, the systems from various novels he had read back on Earth always knew about things, and when their Hosts asked them, they just played dumb or said the Host wasn’t powerful enough.
Just like the time he had merged with the Star Core Fragment and saw various Constellations and outer space. Then he asked the system about it, which the system denied without a shred of hesitation.
’I wonder if anyone has achieved Perfect Elemental Control within Crymora,’ Asher thought to himself in silence. If someone of that caliber existed, it would make his own journey easy as he could seek out such a person and ask for one or two pointers.
Even if they didn’t share the same elemental affinity, he could still learn a lot of things.
’I wonder if Father has Perfect Elemental Control, or if Elder Morthern’s ability granted him such skills,’ Asher thought to himself.
But, one had to ask, how would these people even know they had achieved Perfect Elemental Control? It wasn’t like there was something that told them that they had hit the ceiling of power. After all, even he himself, Asher, didn’t know where his own Elemental Control stood despite having a system that measured his progress.
Was it twenty percent? Ten percent? Fifteen percent? He didn’t know at all.
All in all, none of them would know, they would all keep trying to get stronger and when they saw no progress in that aspect, then they would just assume they’d hit the ceiling of their talent in that aspect and focus on other aspects of their power.
Even he, Asher, might not have known he possessed Perfect Astra Control after he merged with the Star Core Fragment if the system hadn’t told him.
Asher didn’t bother telling the system to create a new feature interface to monitor elemental control progress as he knew the system wouldn’t even reply. He had come to the conclusion that the system came with fixed interfaces and functions and couldn’t alter itself.
’I guess that answers all my questions,’ Asher thought to himself, although it was a shame to rely on unknown and uncontrollable variables like Trance to tap into such a power again.
’Hey, system, one final question,’ Asher spoke to the system as he was done with his own thoughts.
[Listening]
The system replied.
’Since I fought a Dust Voidstar Life Ranker, and also achieved Elemental Combination which caused a breakdown of my body, did my stats jump without Limitless Physical Growth activating?’ he asked as he really wanted to know.
Although he could just check the system panel, Asher felt a yes or no from the system would suffice for now then he would check the system panel later if the system answered with a Yes.
The system felt like rolling its eyes, too bad it had none. But alas, it would only answer as the unpaid labourer it was.
[Negative, Host]
It chimed.
’Thanks for your time,’ Asher stated in finality.
[...]
[It seems the system might actually have to hold its breath]
Asher mused at the system’s words then stopped communicating with it. He opened his eyes, the moment he did, he saw Arianna standing with her twin short swords in hand, standing guard as though she was monitoring for any ambush.
Asher couldn’t help but smile, even if an ambush occurred, he would immediately know, after all, his Omni Perception, Accelerated Thought Process and Perfect Astra Control weren’t a joke.
From the moment Asher closed his eyes and communicated with the system till now, only two seconds had passed, perks and thanks to Accelerated Thought Process.
He floated downwards, the moment he did, Arianna’s amber-gold eyes snapped towards him as she hadn’t expected him to be done so soon.
"So?" Arianna asked the moment their eyes met, curious about whether he was successful.
Asher simply gave a small smile and began to explain everything, well, not including the Star Core Fragment. But he told Arianna about the Elemental Combination, he had no reason to hide it. But he also stated the fact that it was only Star Energy that allowed him to succeed and that he would never be able to use such an attack unless he achieved Perfect Elemental Control.
All in all, he gave Arianna the base and important information the system had given.
Arianna stayed silent for a moment, she was familiar with the concept of trance, after all, she herself had experienced it once before.
"I guess it’s a shame I would never be able to use such a power for myself," she mused aloud with a sigh.
Her Genesis Archive ability didn’t grant an Elemental affinity, but only skills. While she may be able to analyze and store the skill that came from Elemental Combination, that would depend on the fact that she had to find someone who could use it first.
She couldn’t help but think about the people whom she knew that possessed outrageous elemental control back at the Velkarin Empire, she might give them the information and allow them to try it out at their own risk, while she made sure they knew of the risk.
Asher wasn’t bothered about Arianna giving out the information, to know something was one thing, but being able to use it was another.
Knowledge was power, but that statement was only true if you benefited from it. If you didn’t, then knowledge was nothing.
Perfect Elemental Control was already a mad task, let alone two Perfect Elemental Controls. Asher could already imagine people of the Velkarin Empire dying for trying to touch such power. But oh well, he knew Arianna was probably only going to tell one or two people in confidentiality so she could copy the resulting skills from them.
But, one had to know that Elemental Combination and Elemental Overlapping were two different concepts.
Elemental Overlapping was the state where people like Asher, Arianna, Teo Swing, would stack various elements, like Wind, Lightning, Light and Gravity to increase their speed and damage output.
One can’t help but wonder if the phrase; "same same but different," fit this explanation.
