The man stared at Acker for a moment before asking, "May I come in?" His tone was calm and flat. He looked to be in his late forties or early fifties, and he was an Unawakened.
At the question, Acker finally stepped out of the way. The man entered with calm steps. He wasn’t wearing any uniform or designated colors, as he essentially wore whatever he wanted, which told everyone that he was from the Miscellaneous Group.
Asher and Saitama’s gazes focused on the man. Acker closed the door and returned to his bed, leaving the three of them staring at him as they waited for him to speak.
"My name is Raul, and I’m here to catalogue the important items you will need before deployment to your first assignment," he stated calmly. His words were almost machine-like, suggesting that he had said the same thing a thousand times, if not more.
The three of them remained silent without a word, simply staring at him. Raul didn’t mind their silence. He simply brought down the backpack on his back and took out three space rings. He then stepped forward as he spoke in an explanatory tone.
"As many people who enter the Frontiers and Outposts are usually Commoners, the Commander has made it a rule and standard to always issue a space ring to every newly recruited Cadet," he stated as he came to a stop before Acker, handing one to him.
Acker stared at the space ring before collecting it. As Acker accepted it, Raul continued explaining.
"Although a few Commoners might have space rings, they are usually the cheapest ones, with the smallest storage capacity, barely large enough to fit their clothes." He turned and gave one to Saitama, then another to Asher. "Therefore, standard-sized space rings are given to everyone, regardless of status, before they enter the Frontier."
He turned and walked toward his backpack, which was on the ground. "As you progress in rank, another space ring will be issued to match your new rank and needs," he continued, his voice fading as he zipped up and picked up his backpack.
Asher stared at the space ring. He sensed the space inside, and it was indeed standard. However, even a standard-sized space ring cost hundreds of gold coins at minimum, yet Damian Wargrave was giving them out like candy.
"What if I don’t need it?" Saitama asked as he stared at the space ring. Although he was a Commoner, he possessed something better than this, courtesy of a particular someone.
"Then burn it, throw it away, swallow it, or give it out. It doesn’t matter," Raul stated as he turned toward Saitama. "All that matters is that the Frontier gave you the standard space ring. What you do to it or with it has nothing to do with the Algorith Frontier," he stated flatly.
Saitama nodded and said nothing else. He simply slipped the ring onto his pinky finger. There was nothing wrong with having another space ring, anyway.
After that, Raul began sharing numerous items from his personal space ring, ranging from salves for cleaning injuries to bandages for holding dressings and gauze in place.
He also provided ointments that were supposed to facilitate the process of natural healing by ten percent, stitching kits for closing and sewing serious wounds, bruise balm for reducing swelling, hemostatic powder for slowing or stopping moderate bleeding, and many more supplies.
The trio were surprised by the number of items they were given. Normally, people like Asher and Acker simply healed themselves whenever they were injured, so they had no need for these supplies. Even if they required healing, they had healers who could restore them to perfect health.
Thus, they had never encountered most of these items. However, Asher understood why they existed. There were no healing potions or regeneration elixirs in this world, so its people had to compensate in one way or another, especially since healers rarely went to the battlefield themselves.
Therefore, all these items were meant for Soldiers to use so they could survive long enough to return to the Frontier Base for proper healing.
The trio accepted everything without a word. Raul even demonstrated how to use and apply each item, ensuring that the Cadets wouldn’t die due to a lack of knowledge.
’Running a Frontier costs a whole lot of money,’ Asher thought to himself as he wondered how wealthy this man named Damian Wargrave was to shoulder all these expenses alone for years.
He wasn’t naive enough to believe that this treatment was standard across all Frontiers. That would be like expecting every company in the world to pay the same salary and provide the same benefits.
Raul took out a clipboard and a pen as he spoke. "I will be taking down the weapons you need. If there are any specifications you want, we can add them to the weapon." His tone remained as flat as usual.
"I have a soul-bound rapier, so I don’t need one," Asher stated calmly.
Raul turned his gaze toward Asher for a moment before simply writing down rapier. He then drew the jagged teeth that Virelass possessed, as he had seen the rapier during the Inter-Empire Tournament.
"What about you?" Raul asked Acker.
"A staff. Amitabha," Acker stated, as he knew he couldn’t convince the man to stop asking.
Raul nodded before turning his eyes toward Saitama, who remained silent for a moment. Saitama sighed before speaking.
"I use my bare fists for fighting," he stated in a calm tone. "So, what I need is an ordinary dark green glove that matches this Cadet uniform, not a gauntlet." His black eyes met Raul’s.
At Saitama’s words, Asher couldn’t help but remember Isaac for a moment, as that guy always used his bare fists but reinforced his bones and body through his Biomancy ability. With that in mind, he wondered what Saitama’s ability was. Maybe it was related to his Physique. He didn’t know, and he could only continue guessing until he either asked or saw Saitama fight.
Raul simply nodded at Saitama’s words before drawing and writing something on his clipboard. The clipboard vanished from his hand the next moment. He stared at the trio before speaking in a final tone.
"Your items will be delivered by the end of today or early tomorrow, after breakfast. Thank you for your time," he stated in one breath before turning around and heading toward the door.
Asher, Acker, and Saitama could only watch as Raul left without another glance at them. The man departed as though he had hundreds of other Cadets to attend to, and he did. He had to attend to all the Cadets who had been brought in the previous day. There were over a hundred of them, scattered across various locations.
He had no time to waste.
As Raul closed the door, Asher sighed before lying down on his bed with a calm expression. He soon drifted off to sleep. Just because Raul had come didn’t mean his plan to take a one-hour nap before cultivation training had changed.
Besides, he was happy. According to Raul’s words, once they received their equipment by tomorrow at the latest, they could begin their deployment and assignments the following day at the earliest.
With that, he fell asleep with a smile on his face, like a baby.
