Chapter 1162: Baby Goblins

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The group moved slowly through the forest, the minutes passing as they finally came to a stop. This area was the first location that was marked in the book.

Around this area, a group of Echo-Class Wolves was stated to stay, along with a few minor animals like deer and antelope that they fed on. The Echo-Class Wolves were stated to be nine in number and ruled this small area.

"Cadet James, you will be the first to move."

Corporal Sonya stated, her eyes shifting towards a boy who was around twenty-two and stood with Asher.

"Track the Wolves within a two-hundred-meter radius and find out if their number suddenly increased or decreased. If decreased, find the cause. And also find out if another group of Monsters suddenly started living around here."

She said, her tone authoritative and flat.

Cadet James nodded as he spoke.

"Yes, Corporal Sonya."

Without waiting for another word, he dropped from the branch he was standing on. He landed with a bit of sound, showing he hadn’t exactly been given any stealth training, but his landing was gentle enough. As he landed, he closed his eyes and listened. After a few moments, he got nothing, then began to manually track the Wolves.

This was the grunt work. Corporal Sonya didn’t point in any direction; Cadet James had to track the Wolves himself and investigate everything.

Asher and the remaining three Cadets remained silent as they simply waited for Cadet James to return. A few minutes passed, the sound of muffled footsteps entering their ears. They turned their heads in the direction, and from there, Cadet James came.

He lifted off the ground and landed with ease, his eyes fixing on Corporal Sonya as he proceeded to speak with a mildly respectful tone.

"I found no abnormalities within a two-hundred-meter radius. The Wolves still remain the same number, and no other Monsters were found within the assigned range."

He reported his findings, his black eyes meeting Corporal Sonya’s.

Corporal Sonya stayed silent for a moment. She didn’t reply; she merely moved, her body leaving the three as she proceeded to carry out the order herself. There was no way that the Algorith Frontier would assign something to a Cadet and just assume they didn’t make any mistakes or miss anything. It was only natural to miss something, after all, it was their first deployment.

Soon, Corporal Sonya returned. She found nothing, as Cadet James had said. At her return, she simply turned towards him and nodded as she spoke.

"Good work."

That was all she said, her tone as neutral as ever.

With that, she turned and moved as they continued their journey. They were meant to cover a fifty-kilometer radius, but at the moment, they had only covered barely a kilometer. While the work rate seemed slow given it was a superpowered world, things had to slow down so that the Cadets could actually learn.

Things continued, each location marked in the book bringing them to a halt, and Corporal Sonya always assigning the checkout operations to each Cadet. Some made mistakes or missed something, like startling the Monsters and Beasts they were supposed to track and spy on.

Although startled and forced to fight, they never fought to kill, just to repel. And through it all, Corporal Sonya never berated any of them for the mistakes and errors; she simply made corrections, informed them on where they could do better, reminding them that experience was the best teacher and they couldn’t just learn the job on day one.

Not everyone was a student of the Star Academy and attended the stealth class.

As they crossed the fifteenth-kilometer radius, they came to a stop. Corporal Sonya turned towards Asher as she spoke.

"Cadet Asher, it’s your turn this time. Veil-Class Goblins dominate this area in large numbers. They are just above a hundred in number but always below a hundred and ten."

She stood with her hands clasped behind her back as she spoke, her eyes meeting Asher’s purple ones.

"Due to their high birth rate, we always expect them to have new babies lying around. Your mission is simple: perform a headcount. If above, curb the number to the required count, either by killing the babies or the adults. The range is two kilometers in radius."

At her order, Asher simply nodded with a neutral expression that revealed nothing. Although he would very much love to be cultivating right now, he had to perform his duties as a Soldier.

Asher leaped down from the tree branch. He landed without a sound, then moved with a quiet jog that still covered quite the distance with each step. Although he could just expand his Omni Perception and find out what he needed, or use Spatial Sense, Astra Sense, or Star Sense, he didn’t. He just wanted everyone to see he put in his own work, so it wouldn’t look like he stood in one place and talked out his ass.

Although Corporal Sonya would investigate and his claims coming out as the truth would count for a good aura-framing moment, he still decided to do this a bit manually.

The investigation didn’t just involve finding the Goblins and calling it a day. He had to search and take notice of everything within a two-kilometer radius, whether he found the Goblins or not.

After a moment, he arrived at a small cavern, his body vanishing into the second layer of space as he walked in. The first thing that hit his senses was the stench in the air. It was heavy, but it didn’t bother him; he simply walked inside.

Within the cavern, various Goblins could be seen. They surrounded a bonfire in the middle as they roasted a bunch of meat over it. They laughed and discussed things in their language, which sounded like gibberish to Asher’s ears.

Most of them were Whisper-Class and Echo-Class Goblins, with barely about five reaching the Veil-Class that Corporal Sonya had talked about. His eyes shifted deeper into the cavern as he spotted a Goblin that was of the Fang-Class rank and seemed to have entered the rank recently.

Asher withdrew his gaze, uninterested. His eyes fell on the Goblins, the new baby Goblins already reaching twenty. He turned around and walked away, then explored the two-kilometer radius that had been assigned to him. After that, he returned to his group to report to Corporal Sonya.

As he landed on the branch, he returned to the first layer of space, his sudden appearance startling everyone except Corporal Sonya, whose hand only went to her weapon out of reflex.

"Total amount of Goblins: one hundred and twenty-five, and a Goblin has touched the Fang-Class."

His voice came as he reported his findings without exaggeration or adding anything else.

As usual, Corporal Sonya investigated, then returned swiftly, her attention falling on Asher as she spoke.

"As ordered earlier, wipe out the twenty babies or twenty Goblins, then also kill the Fang-Class Goblin. With its breakthrough to a higher Class, it will order the rest of the Goblins to invade another Monster location, hence upsetting the established balance."

She ordered without a change in expression.

If this were another Cadet with Asher, she wouldn’t have ordered them to kill the Fang-Class Goblin, as none of the four could.
