Hundreds of kilometres away from the Frontier where Asher was fighting, another Frontier stood. This Frontier was called The Sun, and needless to say, Malrik was its owner. As his Affinity was the Sun, he had simply given the name to his Frontier without thinking much about it.At this moment, his face was ice-cold. The smile he had always worn on his face was nowhere to be seen, replaced by nothing but anger. Malrik wasn’t sure he had ever been this angry, aside from when someone had targeted his siblings.
He hadn’t been at his Frontier when the explosion had gone off. After getting FatelessPen as his Vice Commander, he had simply dumped the Frontier on FatelessPen after the man had learnt the ropes within a couple of weeks. This was something every ruler did once their right-hand man became extremely competent.
He did it, Azaron did it, and many others did it.
It was the message he received from Azaron and FatelessPen that made him rush back to his own Frontier.
And the worst part was that, as he rushed back, he had been intercepted by a woman from the Velkarin Empire who had been deployed to fight him, while another Radiant Crownstar Life Ranker kept FatelessPen busy.
But despite his anger, Malrik was facing a situation he had never encountered before in his life: he couldn’t use his soul-bound katana, Solaris.
Malrik was a man who never returned his soul-bound katana to his soul and always hung it on his waist like a true swordsman. It was even by watching him that Asher had begun carrying Virelass around his waist like a swordmaster.
But the moment he met this woman, Solaris vanished from his scabbard, returned to his soul, and remained dormant there. No matter how many times he called out to the weapon through their connection, it didn’t answer.
Malrik had arrived at an answer: his own soul-bound weapon had either been sealed or subjected to something along those lines.
Yes, it was said that soul-bound weapons couldn’t be sealed or destroyed, but this woman certainly had something capable of restricting his soul-bound katana.
Whether she had achieved this through her innate ability or an artefact, he didn’t know, and personally, he didn’t particularly care, as all he had to do was kill her and get it over with. After that, Solaris would return to him.
Although Malrik didn’t show it, deep in his heart, a flicker of fear existed.
It wasn’t fear of fighting this woman or of his own death, but fear that one of his loved ones might need him and he would be unable to help them because Solaris wasn’t available at the moment.
He feared losing anyone he cared about, and it was an experience he had never been willing to face.
"It’s an honour to finally meet you, First Sun."
The woman spoke with a calm smile on her face as she walked around the forest where she had intercepted Malrik, as if she owned the Zarethorne Empire.
"I’m pretty sure you’re wondering why your soul-bound weapon isn’t working at the moment, right?"
She asked as she leaned forward with a teasing smile, the explosions and sounds of battle coming from the Sun Frontier reaching their ears.
Malrik didn’t reply. His blue eyes shifted towards the side, his gaze reaching the Sun Frontier despite the distance.
He wasn’t worried about his people, as he could see clones of FatelessPen helping across the entire battlefield, assisting the soldiers in their own battles while making sure not to kill their enemies outright, as even in war, one must still overcome challenges, survive, and improve.
His attention returned to the woman, who continued speaking like she knew her victory had already been etched into stone.
"Well, I won’t be telling you why, but you have the Emperor to thank for his genius idea."
The woman continued calmly.
"Honestly, I don’t know how nobody ever thought about it. Until this day, you’ve fought numerous enemies and used your soul-bound katana many times, yet all your enemies died, and not a single thing is known about your soul-bound weapon."
She paused for a moment, then continued, her eyes narrowing.
"Doesn’t it stand to reason that maybe the reason you’re this strong and ridiculous is because of your soul-bound weapon? And if we manage to keep it in check... whoever fights you will survive, and you stand to die and lose your first battle."
She stated this as a grin spread across her face, like she were explaining some sort of checkmate.
Contrary to what this woman had claimed, Emperor Horace wasn’t the one who had come up with the idea. It was the Sinvairas themselves.
They had speculated that the reason Malrik was ridiculously powerful and talented was his weapon, which was why the Wargrave family had never made its abilities known and why nobody had ever witnessed them.
They had proposed the idea to Emperor Horace and told him to act on it.
Of course, the Sinvairas weren’t naive enough to believe that this woman was powerful enough to kill the man known as The Bloodline Eraser simply because he didn’t have his soul-bound weapon.
Malrik was a ridiculous man through and through, and they knew that, as one of their greatest regrets was not killing him when they had the chance in the past.
So, at this moment, the woman was simply a test run. If Malrik’s combat strength wasn’t what they expected it to be against this woman, then it would mean that his soul-bound katana had been doing all the heavy lifting throughout his past battles. In that case, they could set their true plan to kill him in motion.
But if he won effortlessly, as the rumours suggested, even without his soul-bound katana, they would wait and devise another plan.
Therefore, this battle was merely a test run to determine the Sinvairas’ next move on the board. There was no way Malrik would kill Orvak and go unpunished.
This woman was merely a pawn, and whatever happened from that point onwards, they had nothing to lose, even if their scheme failed.
Although nobody knew the abilities of Azaron’s soul-bound spear either, nobody bothered guessing for one simple reason.
Azaron has never fought anyone with his soul-bound weapon abilities.
There was a reason the reddish-black, battle-obsessed spear was named Ender, and a reason he had gone further to name his techniques the Ending Spear Technique and the Ending Martial Technique.
"I’ve already imagined my glorious return to my Empire, knowing that I, Jada, killed the First Sun."
Jada continued as she imagined the prestige she would gain for herself. She pictured herself being promoted within the Military Force and even receiving a noble title from the Emperor upon her return.
Malrik closed his eyes for a moment as he heaved an internal sigh of relief. Personally, he had thought that someone had figured out the true abilities of his soul-bound katana, which was why they had gone to such great lengths to restrict it.
It was the reason he feared losing his loved ones, as if someone had made such a deduction and managed to keep him and Solaris in check, surely they would make a move against his siblings or anyone he cared about.
But since that wasn’t the case, and the Emperor and the others had simply been wrong in their assumptions, the slight fear he had felt for his loved ones vanished.
