After discussing everything together, the group had decided to not focus too much on the troubles ahead of them, at least for one day. There was too much hanging over them, too many problems that had surfaced all at once, and if they allowed themselves to dwell on it constantly, it would only weigh them down further. So they decided to have a little celebration in the Wolf’s pool club. All Howler members were invited and it was a bigger turnout than they expected. The atmosphere inside the club was loud and lively. Music played in the background, voices overlapped one another, and for once the place didn’t feel like a base of operations or a headquarters for planning battles. It felt like what it used to be, a place for friends to gather. They enjoyed eating together, stuffing their faces, and continuing to talk about the things they had gone through. Every few minutes someone would interrupt with another question about the other world, or laugh at something that had sounded unbelievable yet had truly happened.
What was surprising was many of those in Lupus’ group had decided to come and join, most likely that was because Lupus himself was there as well. His presence made it easier. The tension that once existed between the packs was still there in small traces, but it wasn’t overwhelming. People spoke more cautiously at first, yet as the night went on, even that eased.
It was the one night of break that they would have, the one night of joy to try and forget the stress ahead of them, but no matter what they couldn’t help but think. Even as laughter echoed around them, the weight of reality lingered in the back of their minds. White was missing, strange Werewolves were appearing everywhere, Unzoku was out there somewhere and lastly there were the vampires as well. Every single one of those problems could grow into something massive if left unchecked.
Somehow Gary needed to try and resolve all of these things. Even while smiling and speaking with the others, there were moments when his thoughts drifted. He would look around at everyone enjoying themselves and feel the responsibility pressing on him again. They were counting on him. They always had been.
The next day when the sun rose, it didn’t take long for Lupus to leave. The celebration had gone late into the night, but Lupus had already made up his mind. A pick up truck had been arranged for him, and large crates had been piled up at the back. It was the equipment that had been taken from the Dark Guild and was being handed to Lupus himself. The metal crates were stacked carefully, secured tightly, holding materials that would be used for something greater.
“Lupus.” Luzen called out. “Are you sure you don’t want us to go with you?”
Both Luzen, and Slit were standing by the side walk. While Gary, Kai, Xin, Marie, Innu and Austin had all decided to see Lupus off as he went back to his city as well slightly behind him. The morning air was cool, quiet compared to the noise of the previous night. It felt more serious now.
“The Lupus group is practically no more.” Lupus claimed. “Ruin city is destroyed and we lost the war with the Howlers. Which means that our enemy are most likely to target them. I wish for the two of you to stay in Slough, you will be better use here for them, and if there is trouble I will return don’t worry about that.”
There was no bitterness in his voice when he spoke about losing the war. It was simply a fact. He had accepted it. What mattered now was the future.
Marcus had also come to see Lupus off as they were more than allies in a way, he would even say that they were close to being friends due to how close their relationship was. Still because of his business sense in his mind, he had tried to keep it strictly business to appear to have no favourites even though he clearly did.
“I would have come with you, but I feel like I am needed here as well.” Marcus claimed.
As he was thinking back to the message that the NIRV founder had told him. He was to help the Howlers and he felt like that was rather important. There were responsibilities in Slough that couldn’t be ignored.
“Don’t worry Galdark will be with me, and when I return I will have completed our equipment.” Lupus claimed as he waved and got in the vehicle driving off.
The truck pulled away slowly at first before picking up speed down the road. For a few seconds no one spoke, watching as the vehicle disappeared further into the distance.
“So what happens if Unzoku goes off and tries to control Lupus again, since he’s going back to Ruin city on his own?” Innu asked.
“Well, controlling Lupus now means to just control one.” Kai said. “There is no longer a pack for him to use. So I doubt he would do so. Even as strong as Lupus is, we beat him before and we can beat him again. Most likely.” Kai stated.
It wasn’t complete confidence, but it was reassurance. They had faced worse odds before. They had survived.
In the vast country, there were many cities, that were struggling with the changes that were taking place. Governments were having to step up. Funding was being asked of large companies to try and fund more of the police force to quell the underworld. Meetings were being held, announcements made, public statements promising stability and safety.
And in some ways it was somewhat starting to work. The fall of the kings had made a lot of structure fall. Gangs fighting each other and taking out each other, giving the perfect chance for the police to finally seize some control. Power vacuums created chaos, but they also created opportunity.
However, there was one city that had next to no problems, and that was because the current King that was there, was from the Bree family, Daphine.
“What is going on?” Daphine asked as she was swimming away, at her home resort that had an incredibly large swimming pool.
The water shimmered under the morning light, calm and clear. She moved through it effortlessly, strong and composed. Yet even there, in her private space, the outside world was intruding.
She had been getting numerous calls on her phone, and eventually her own members had come out. They stood at the edge of the pool, hesitant to interrupt but knowing they had to.
“Ma’am, it seems there has been large number of deaths that have been occurring in the city.” One of the members stated. “They have said that some even have a wolf like Altered appearance.
“It’s strange, as an Altered, or other gang hasn’t attacked our city for some time, and we don’t think it would make sense for them to attack now. Our scout team was sent out, but none of them are responding, it’s assumed they have been eliminated by the threat.”
Getting out of the pool, soaking the floor with water Daphine walked over and placed the towel around her. Droplets trailed down her arms as she dried herself off slowly, her expression changing from mild irritation to something more focused.
“I thought with most of the kings gone, that nearly all of our troubles would be dealt with… but I guess not.” Daphine sighed. “But a Wolf like Altered…it can’t be them, can it?”
