Since her group needed her, Daphne had decided to act herself. There was always the saying if one wanted a job done, they should do it themselves and there was something about the report that interested her.Not only the fact that a team she had sent out with Altereds had perished, meaning the attackers had some level of strength but it was the description in particular. The way the bodies had been found, the lack of clear signs of a struggle from the outside, and the speed at which everything had occurred made her uneasy.
“Hey, hey, hey.” Daphne said as she continued to walk down the open streets. By her side she had two men, one with bright blonde hair and black glasses on, called Koppo, and another man, who was on the smaller taller side, a man who was balding called, Brit.
Lastly, there was one more person that was standing right next to Daphne and that was Yin. One of the top members of the Bree family and the strongest fighters.
Her small slim frame, and long black hair often fooled others, especially those that had thought to have gone easy on her. Those who underestimated her rarely got the chance to correct their mistake.
Although the other two men weren’t the best in the family. The Bree group unlike other gangs in the country was a group that expanded across the entire world.
So some of the higher ranking members were doing something important, and it seemed strange to call them over for something, if the trouble wasn’t actually as bad as she originally thought.
“What’s wrong?” Yin asked.
“It’s these reports, have you seen how many dead bodies they have found and it’s only been three days, there’s a total of fifty of them.”
The number hung in the air. Fifty. Not gang members. Not marked targets. Civilians.
“Is that really a lot?” Koppo asked. “I mean there’s millions of people in this city.”
Daphne stopped walking for a second and turned her head slightly.
“That’s a crazy amount, there’s around twenty deaths for every 100,000 people in a city…but that number is per year.” Daphne said. “That’s even when you count the high crime rate and gangs going against each other.
“With someone doing this, it’s as if they don’t care about anything at all.”
That was what unsettled her the most. Careless killing. No message. No claim. No gain.
Just with this, she thought it couldn’t be the Howlers, but she just couldn’t imagine who would be stupid enough to kill so many regular citizens at that.
Killing citizens did nothing, it didn’t weaken the power of a gang, and only put a target on one’s back if they were from another group.
So she was even more curious than before.
“That’s the building.” Yin said as she pointed at one of the buildings in the middle of the business district. There were plenty of buildings around it that were just as grand mostly made out of glass.
But some had a reflective glare on it making it so one couldn’t see the inside while the sun was out.
“Most of the deaths were occurring all were linked to the business district. The team was last supported heading inside of there.
“The place has been cleared out, so there should be no one inside.” Yin said.
Cleared out. That meant police had already gone through. That meant tape and statements and routine work.
And yet the killer had not been caught. They walked towards the front and pushed the door open. The glass doors swung inward without resistance. The air inside was cooler, still.
“Well we’re here hoping that someone is inside.” Daphne commented.
“Sp what are we going to do?” Brit asked. “Are we going to search floor by floor, there are at least thirty businesses here.”
Daphne then turned around, because what there was also behind the group following them along, was a dog.
A large dark coated hound with sharp eyes and a calm posture.
“Don’t worry, this one has a keen sense of smell, and is going to let us know if there are any intruders, but I will let you know we’re still going to have to take the stairs.”
The group sighed, and headed towards the staircase.
“What are you guys doing?” Daphne said. “Don’t you think it’s easier if we take the lift to the top floor, and then walk down? But if you want to climb up that many stairs, then be my guest.”
The others agreed, and for Altered like them, honestly either way should have been fine, it was just still annoying and rather tiring.
Heading inside they pressed the top floor. Which was owned by an IT firm, it was a building that should have mainly been filled with office cubicles, common areas, and maybe the odd game room or so.
The elevator began its slow ascent. The hum of machinery filled the silence. When the elevator was reaching the top, that’s when the dog started to bark away. Sharp. Repeated.
“What’s going on, why is he getting so noisy?” Koppo asked.
“I think we might not have to use any staircases.” Daphne said. “He smells blood.”
The ding sound had been heard of them reaching the top floor, and the elevator doors slid open.
They were greeted into the large main open area of the office, but it looked nothing like an office at all.
All of the desks, chairs and computers had all been trashed pushed to the side, wires hanging from broken monitors, overturned furniture scattered like debris after a storm. The smell hit them next. Metallic. Thick.
And staring right in front of them was a mound, a mound of dead bodies, with most of the flesh already having left their bodies.
