The moment the medallion was shattered, a cataclysmic surge of energy erupted from Unzoku’s frame. A massive, suffocating wave of red mist exploded outward, swirling around his body like a living shroud of malevolent intent. It gathered with terrifying density, thickening into a sheet of aura that clung to every inch of his fur. To the onlookers, it appeared as if Unzoku had physically doubled in size, his presence now so heavy that it seemed to warp the very air around him.
Marie and Xin, who had been watching the exchange with bated breath, felt their hearts sink. They knew the paramount importance of the medallion; it had been their primary tool to suppress his god-like influence. Without that ancient anchor, they couldn't help but wonder how they could possibly win this war. The psychological blow was almost as devastating as the physical one.
But an even more worrying thought began to take root in their minds.
“Should we head in now?” Marie asked, her voice trembling as she tightened her grip. “Now that they don’t have the medallion, Unzoku’s powers of control will work on them again, right? If he takes over their minds, they won’t be able to fight back, they’ll become his puppets!”
However, the immediate reality on the battlefield didn't seem to match her fears. Kai was already on the move, his primal instincts overriding any lingering shock. Rushing forward with a feral snarl, he dashed across the ruins, his massive jaws opening wide as a concentrated blast of frost shot out from his maw.
Unzoku lifted his massive, aura-coated arm, blocking the frost hit with ease. The sheer power radiating from his red aura was so intense that the ice began to melt and evaporate into steam before it could even settle. Right as Kai reached him, Unzoku dropped his guard and slammed a condensed fist directly into the silver wolf’s head, sending him crashing into the ground with enough force to crack the foundation.
Almost simultaneously, Unzoku felt Gary’s presence lunging toward him from the shadows. Without even turning his head, the progenitor threw out a back-kick, his heel connecting with Gary’s stomach. The impact sent the black wolf tumbling back, but Gary’s momentum was relentless; he flipped in mid-air and leapt toward Unzoku again.
As Unzoku stretched out his hand, the red aura surrounding him seemed to expand and stretch like a physical tentacle. It wrapped around Gary’s waist mid-leap, coiled tight like a serpent, and then flung him across the arena, pinning him firmly to the floor.
Before either of the Alphas could recover, Unzoku reached down, grabbed Kai by the tail, and hurled his massive frame directly toward where Gary was struggling to stand. The two behemoths tumbled together among the debris of the Haunted House, a chaotic mess of black and silver fur. They were clearly still able to fight, but the issue manifested the moment they scrambled to their feet.
Instead of turning their fury back toward Unzoku, the two were suddenly fighting against each other. The Apex forms had completely lost their sense of direction. Flames and ice erupted in a violent clash as they bit and punched at one another, their primal minds seeing only the nearest threat.
“If he could have stopped them and forced them to attack us, he would have done it by now,” Xin observed, her eyes narrowing as she analyzed the struggle. “My guess is that he can’t control them in this state because they aren't sound of mind. When he uses his control, he must be influencing a conscious part of the brain. Right now, they're pure instinct.”
She paused, her expression turning somber. “Regardless, I think the bigger issue is that the two of them might end up killing each other before Unzoku even has to lift a finger.”
Unzoku, ever the opportunist, wasn't the type to care about a fair fight. Seeing his two greatest threats occupied with each other, he leapt high into the air. The red aura thickened and swirled around his arms as he descended, slamming both fists down on top of their heads. The impact sent them plummeting into the ground, a shockwave shaking the entire theme park arena.
Thankfully, the bodies of the True Alpha wolves were incredibly resilient, and in these forms, they were far from weak. They survived the crushing blow, but as they jumped back and split apart, they immediately rushed toward Unzoku again, their coordination frayed but their aggression peaking.
Unzoku was careful as he met Gary’s charge. He spun his body, using the momentum to slam a fist directly into Gary’s face, the strike breaking right through the defensive posture Gary had tried to maintain. As the hit connected, a massive amount of heat exploded from Gary’s body, an automatic defensive measure triggered by his internal furnace, but it didn't matter. Unzoku’s aura was strong enough to break through. He grabbed Gary by the throat and hurled him once more toward Kai.
The moment Gary got close, he latched onto Kai, his fingers prying at the silver wolf's jaw as he tried to tear it apart. Frost began to build up in Kai’s mouth, a freezing counter-attack, but Gary responded in kind. A tunnel of Shadow Ash flames flowed from Gary’s throat, meeting Kai’s ice head-on. There was a clear victor in this test of raw power; Gary’s flames pushed deeper, heading straight inside Kai’s maw.
“I’m not sure what to do,” Xin said, her entire body tensing as she prepared to intervene.
The dilemma was paralyzing. In their True Alpha forms, Unzoku was unable to control them, but they were destroying themselves. If the Lunas used their power to revert the transformation, Gary and Kai would regain their senses, but without the medallion, Unzoku would be able to seize control of their minds instantly.
However, looking at the two of them now, did it really look like they were going to win in this state? If anything, they were on the verge of mutual destruction.
“What’s the better option?” Xin asked, her voice cracking.
She felt Marie’s hand suddenly grab hers, squeezing tight.
“They’ll find a way, Xin. Even without the medallion, those guys... they always have,” Marie said, her voice full of a desperate, long-standing faith. “I’ve known them for a long time. They can push through and work something out, but the way they are right now, they can’t even think of a solution. Their minds are gone.”
Marie looked at the struggling wolves, her resolve hardening. “So, we have to trust them to be themselves. We have to bring them back.”
“You’re right,” Xin agreed, her aura beginning to flare.
Once they turned them back, they just had to hope that somehow, someway, the real Gary and the real Kai could find a way to take Unzoku down before he took them over.
