"I’m guessing that you apply this meta-integrative substrate to a person’s consciousness," he remarked.
"Correct, but it is not that simple. For one, the substance needs to be in direct contact, which alone requires extremely advanced biotechnology to ensure that the highly toxic esoteric matter doesn’t simply kill the subject on the spot," she replied. "Then, you need to prevent undesirable matter homogenization. The substance causes biological tissue to simply homogenize into a mound of organic matter that is uniformly in all directions. Which instantly kills the subject. So you need powerful and extremely precise stasis fields to hold neurology in place and prevent the cells of your body from melting. Much of the complexity of the procedure is simply to prevent the many undesirable interactions between meta-integrative substrate and a person’s brain and mind."
"...And it works? It actually homogenizes the mind and phenomenology?" Rui raised an eyebrow in disbelief.
"Correct," she nodded. "We choose subjects with a high mastery and affinity for webs. And thus their consequent Verse is one that is highly related to webs."
"Wait, that’s the reason your Verses are related to webs?" He asked with a stunned tone of voice. "Because of the choice of your subjects?"
She nodded. "Correct. It is the evolutionary gift that we have acquired over many a billion years or so that our species has existed. And the concept is very central to our civilization. It’s even in our name. So it was only fitting that people with high affinity and attunement to the concept of webs would be selected for the procedure."
So the fact that Divine Mothers had Webverses was a very conscious decision made by the civilization. That was quite different from the way that it was with human civilization.
"Wait, then why are all of your subjects female?" Rui raised an eyebrow. "Why aren’t there Divine Fathers?"
She did the arakai equivalent of a smile at the question. "We are a matriarchal society, to put in the words of your language. And our females play a disproportionately larger role in fertility. In order to maximize the odds of extraordinary offspring, it is most efficient to have female Administrators."
"I see... so that was a conscious choice as well," Rui mused. "This meta-integrative substrate, have you guys found a way to produce it through Legislation?"
"We have tried, but unfortunately, it’s not that simple," the Divine Mother remarked. "The information form of the substance is very inscrutable. We are unable to identify the laws in this substance that allow for it to be able to unify and homogenize information the way it does. That objective is one of the most well-funded avenues of research in our civilization."
The first thing that Rui would do when he got back home was to check how of this an substance they had. Given that even the arakai only had enough to produce a little over a hundred Divine Mothers, there was no chance that they had anywhere near enough to produce even a single Administrator.
However, there was a chance that human civilization could succeed where the Divine Mothers had failed. Particularly, he had high hopes with Dwight, because the man’s Creationverse and his phenomenological uniformity around the concept of harmony could perhaps be the key to creating a replacement.
The Divine Mother transferred the rest of the related data to him, giving him a chance to study the extremely convoluted procedure. The procedure was so immensely lethal that the difficulty of the process came from preventing the instant death of the subject.
’This part can be compensated for by my Verse, but the material acquisition of the substance is still very hard to deal with.’
According to the data that the Divine Mother sent him, the needed amounts for the procedure to work usually came from anywhere between hundreds or even thousands of infected worlds, depending on how lucky one was.
Those numbers made Rui stiffen. They were nowhere near even a hundred infected worlds, let alone a thousand. Humanity’s expansion into the stars had slowed down for the first time in the Era of Expansion since the war began, and they were nowhere near the necessary numbers.
’A Legislative replacement is the only way,’ he realized. The first thing he would do when he got back home was to get Dwight to take this up as a research project. It didn’t matter even if they didn’t create a procedure that could produce Transcendents by itself. If it could just help their Transcendent candidates take the last step, then it was more than worth it.
In fact, the amount of this substance that they might need for their Transcendent candidates was probably much lower than if one was trying to create a Transcendent from a civilian. After all, the barrier between consciousness and subconsciousness would need to be broken down and then unified from scratch.
Transcendent Candidates had completed more than 90% of the journey or so. Thus, perhaps they only needed one-tenth of the substance to help them break through to Transcendence. If that was the case, then this information was extremely priceless to human civilization. It had been worth it to make this exchange.
"...Thank you for the information, but do you have any concrete proof of all of this?" Rui asked, exercising a final round of caution.
The Divine Mother didn’t seem to be particularly surprised at that. In fact, she seemed prepared for it.
"I have brought a sample with me."
Rui’s eyes lit up at those words, before pausing. "Wait, so that means you anticipated that I would demand more."
Her pincers widened in an arakai smile. "Anticipating what the other party seeks is part of the basics of diplomacy, after all."
She raised her hand, and upon it was teleported the smallest sample of a substance Rui had seen.
A single particle of the substance was all that she had brought with her.
"This is a strategic-class substance even for our civilization, so bringing more would require permissions and approvals, even for me," she told him. "But this is the substance in question."
With one look at it, Rui could tell that all the information she had shared was the truth.
