The particle didn’t belong to the standard model, obviously. He had never seen anything like it. If he had to describe it, it was like—
"—like a particle made up of information," he muttered.
It reminded him of his Armor of Flowing Wisdom. Except this was a particle that was not engineered from quantum fields. Instead, it had a wave function that seemed to expand to engulf others into it, creating a homogeneous environment in turn.
"An expanding quantum wave function that integrates and uniforms everything it touches..." he muttered with great interest. "What an unfathomable substance. No wonder your Legislators failed. I wonder if it’s possible to replicate these effects with Governance."
Governance was what he taken to calling the surface-level reality warping that his Martialverse normally did in battles, affecting solely the causal layer, in contrast to Legislation, which affected the layer of laws.
"It might be possible," she admitted. "However, Governance, by its very nature, is temporary. So any effect achieved by Governance will not last. Even if we were to succeed with creating phenomenological uniformity by violating the laws of reality, it would simply fall apart the moment we withdraw our Verses."
That was true. Still, he suspected that it was possible to use Governance in a more sophisticated manner to produce an effect similar to this indirectly, such that it would remain even if his Verse withdrew. But he knew how absurdly difficult that would be. The procedure was difficult enough by itself, but if he added another layer of complexity, it would as close to impossible as anything ever was.
’I bet I could do it with Gigabrain.’ He knew he would be having this thought more often now that he knew just how powerful he was in that state of mind. Until he saw Amare’s memories, he had downgraded the significance of Gigabrain in his mind. Especially after he upgraded his neurology from bioelectrics to photonics. He simply didn’t think it brought as much value as it used to when he was a Martial Master.
But now that he realized how wrong he had been, it was constantly at the corner of his thoughts. He often wondered if he could use Gigabrain to achieve something that he would not otherwise be able to. And this was one of those.
He was confident he could create a technique to produce Martial Transcendents if he was in that state of mind.
It was so seductive, but he exercised willpower not to fall prey to its whispers. He still remembered the grief and pain in his daughter’s eyes in Amare’s memories. Averting that was his single highest priority.
He shook his head, returning his mind to the present. "You have given me a lot to think about. Thanks. Now for the pact."
"I would like you to give me the method for Administrative impunity before that." She shook her head. "I think I’ve been quite sincere by sharing what might be the most important secret of our civilization. Now it’s your turn, Emperor of Water."
He nodded. She had indeed been quite earnest in this transaction. He had always been distrustful of this seemingly pleasant Divine Mother, but she had proven her sincerity.
"One thing: I intend to share this with other civilizations, and I would like your Pluralist Faction to avoid making competing offers with the likes of the dessandrites and the aquadites."
She didn’t seem pleased by that condition. "Once you give it to us, it is ours. And we will do with it what we want."
"But we’d both make a loss if we share it with both civilizations at once," Rui pointed out.
"Then how about we split up?" she offered. "You make a deal with the aquadites, and I shall make a deal with the dessandrites. I’m closer to the latter and the former seem quite interested in you and appreciative of your power."
Rui considered that, before nodding. "Deal."
He transferred an information package comprehensively explaining the principles of the procedure and the actual steps that they would broadly need to take to execute it. This information was a lot more whole, thorough, detailed, and expansive than whatever the Mindstitch had managed to scry from Argenton’s mind in a rushed hurry.
"This..." Her six eyes widened. "Isn’t this suicide, no wait... I suppose -o— o-o -o- —o—o-..." she began clicking in her native tongue, falling into a deep thought.
The Divine Mother could hide her excitement at finally having obtained the method to Transcendent impunity. Even if she wasn’t as obsessed with it as her sisters in the War Faction, she would have been lying if she said that she didn’t deeply desire it either.
What Transcendent wouldn’t? It was the most suffocating restriction one could possibly imagine, at least if one didn’t want to disappear from civilization for a long time. And now, she was finally free to use her godly powers without any restraints.
"I. Must. Try. This. Right. Away," she clicked with excitement.
Her web stinger began to slowly swell up in a strange manner. Rui, having perused a Divine Mother’s mind, knew what she was doing.
"That’s the method with which you create divine children, right?" He recalled. "It’s the arakai version of pregnancy."
"Not exactly," the Divine Mother corrected even as her web stinger continued expanding. "Arakai bodies are made up of a dozen or so physiological systems of web. And our web stingers can produce webs, so once we reach a certain level of web manipulation proficiency, we can produce bodies laced with our web flesh; that is what divine children are."
Even as she spoke, her web stinger continued getting bigger and bigger. Eventually, it reached a volume comparable to her own body. Rui’s expression contorted with morbid curiosity as the web stinger spat out a clone of herself.
One was almost perfectly identical in nearly every way.
"Wait, can all Divine Mothers do that so quickly?" he asked with alarm, because if so, then it meant that the threat of the War Fact was much more acute than he imagined.
