What Damian didn’t say was that Asher’s statement was indeed extremely accurate.
"As long as you remained alive."
That was the charm of it all. If he ever died, neither Veronica, Ryuk Silverleaf, nor the quiet Michaelson Novrak could sustain this place. While they possessed the power to keep it running, the cost would eat them alive. Not even the Nobles pumped the amount of funds he had invested into this Frontier.
In conclusion, while they were powerful and rich, they weren’t on his level.
So, he had made backup plans, filling various vaults with endless platinum coins and various resources every single day. These reserves would only become accessible upon his death, allowing them to keep the place running without cutting down on the benefits the Soldiers received.
As for any of the three embezzling the money, he knew they didn’t operate that way, as he even trusted them with his life during critical moments. That was how close their bonds were.
But he didn’t trust them with one matter... The Algorith name.
He was sure these three suckers would change the name of the Frontier the moment he died. But alas, there was nothing he could do. He couldn’t exactly complain from the grave, could he?
And another fun fact was that it was Morthern, his older brother, who had given him the idea of multiplying money endlessly.
"Anyway, I only called you here to hear your thoughts about this place and why you chose my Frontier," Damian spoke in a low tone.
Upon hearing the man’s words, Asher merely nodded and said nothing else.
"And since you chose my Frontier over even Azaron, his siblings, and your own siblings, I will grant you a small request," Damian said, clearly pleased that he finally had a Wargrave here. Not that he planned on training Asher personally or anything of the sort, but having a family member nearby made him happy.
"So, if you have any requests, I’m listening, and I will fulfill them if they’re within my power," he stated in finality as he leaned back into his seat.
Asher fell into his thoughts as he seriously considered what he could gain from this man. After a moment, he decided not to be too greedy and simply ask for something small, as Damian had suggested.
"My Cadet deployment will begin in two days at the latest," he began, "and I know that, as a Cadet, the missions I receive will be too easy for someone of my caliber. So, I wanted to ask if there was a way to, you know... bypass this, or perhaps even directly skip Ranks," he requested calmly.
Saitama’s eyes immediately lit up at Asher’s words. This had been plaguing him for a while now. He possessed an innate Physique and was already twenty-six years old. He was probably one of the few people here on par with the Tenth Sun and his fellow bald roommate, so how could he be satisfied with a random mission?
"Already trying to take advantage of me on the first day, huh?" Damian replied without missing a beat. "Rules are rules, Youngest. I can’t change them. And if you skip a Rank, it sets a precedent that Ranks can be skipped, causing any random Cadet off the street to think they have what it takes to skip Ranks," he explained.
Asher sighed. He, just like Saitama, didn’t want to call the man out on his hypocrisy. Damian only used and discarded the rules whenever he wanted and whenever it suited him best.
Damian, seeing Asher’s expression, merely gave a small smile before saying, "If you truly need anything, I’m always here."
Before Asher could even say anything, he heard the snap of a finger. Instantly, he found himself standing in front of the Cadet residence. He turned his head to the side, and there stood Saitama, who had also been teleported by Damian’s finger snap.
’He probably divided the distance between the residence and me to one meter,’ Asher mused to himself as he guessed what Damian had done.
Saitama turned towards Asher as he spoke. "I didn’t introduce myself earlier, and even though we were in the room together, my name is Saitama Silverleaf. Nice to make your acquaintance." His tone was level and cool.
Asher stared at the bald man for a moment before shaking his outstretched hand.
"Asher Wargrave." His tone was as calm as ever.
Saitama withdrew his hand, and together, they turned and stepped into the Cadet residence. Since they had connections to the Commander and Vice Commander, and they were also roommates, it was only a matter of time before they became accustomed to each other’s presence. They might as well introduce themselves now.
’I wonder if Great Elder Damian or the Vice Commander used their power to make Saitama and me roommates,’ he thought to himself as he stared ahead. After a moment, he shook his head and chose to forget the useless thought, as it made no difference.
As they walked, Asher couldn’t help but ask a question that had been bothering his subconscious infinitely.
"I noticed your father was bald too," he stated as he walked. "And since you said you were born bald, I assume he was also born bald, so I have to ask..." He paused for a moment before continuing, "Did some kind of genetic mutation occur in your family in the past?"
Saitama remained silent for a moment before speaking. "I’m surprised it even took you this long to ask, as everyone always asks me one thing or another in relation to my baldness." His steps remained gentle and calm.
"You want the honest truth?" he asked, turning his eyes towards Asher.
Asher simply nodded, as he was curious.
"I don’t know," Saitama replied as he looked ahead. "Although I was born bald, I don’t really care enough to read about and investigate my family’s history and the like." His tone remained level. "But in our family picture, my grandfather, a man I never met, had hair," he added with a tone of finality.
Asher remained silent for a moment before nodding without saying anything.
’I wonder how he would react if I got him a yellow suit with red gloves and boots,’ he mused to himself as he walked, though he showed no smile on his face.
Asher had come to the conclusion that this was a permanent genetic change linked only to the Silverleaf family. If it were some random genetic mutation or whatever, a Crownstar Life Rank healer could erase it. And with Vice Commander Ryuk’s power and connections, Asher refused to believe the man hadn’t tried everything within his power.
Asher wanted to ask about the Physique, but he held his tongue. While he could ask about the hair, the Physique was different, as that would mean touching upon someone’s secret.
Even his own family didn’t know about his Physique, as they simply assumed he possessed a superior Wargrave Physique like Azaron, when he didn’t.
But since he and Saitama were acquaintances now, if they became close enough down the line, the boy could probably share some details whenever he felt comfortable enough to do so.
