As she gained control over the halberd, she spun around on her feet, guiding the momentum and force of the weapon. Her muscles flexed as she channelled more power into it before throwing it forward like a javelin.
As the weapon left her hand, her right hand moved to her jaw as she immediately reconnected the two halves.
The halberd shot forward with greater speed and power than before as it tore towards Malrik’s position.
As the weapon tore towards Malrik like a bullet, the man simply smiled and dodged it before it could plunge into his head. He caught the halberd in the same manner Jada had caught it, but the weapon didn’t push him backwards.
He spun around as he sent it back towards its owner with even greater strength, speaking in a playful tone as he did so.
"I believe this is yours, no?"
As the weapon closed the distance again, Jada shot forward this time, as she wasn’t here to throw weapons around. As she reached the weapon, Astra Energy flowed into her hand, and she caught it by the shaft.
The moment she did, her Astra Energy spread across the weapon and throughout her entire body as she effortlessly erased the distance between herself and Malrik, her speed and strength skyrocketing to an entirely different level.
As she arrived, her attack came in from the side, aiming to decapitate Malrik with a single sweeping slash. But it was never that easy.
Malrik didn’t dodge. Instead, he thrust with his katana, his attack aimed at Jada’s heart with pinpoint accuracy.
Jada was stunned. She couldn’t believe that the First Sun hadn’t blocked an attack aimed at his neck. She wondered if this guy had another life at the bank or something.
But just because Malrik was aiming at her heart didn’t mean she would withdraw her own attack to block his. She refused to do that.
As the katana was about to rip into her heart and the halberd was about to tear through Malrik’s neck, both of them tapped into their opposing affinities.
Malrik’s body exploded into motes of flickering flames a split microsecond before the halberd could reach his neck. Jada tapped into her Ice Affinity, encasing herself in a block of freezing ice.
The motes of flame gathered in another direction as Malrik’s body reformed. He stared at the ice block, which was now shattering into small fragments around Jada.
Malrik arched an eyebrow for a moment before speaking.
"Sigh... Can you please use another Affinity or ability? My sister’s boyfriend uses Ice, and every time I see someone using that Affinity, it reminds me of him and how much I want to break his leg and family jewels for daring to court my sister."
He requested calmly, almost pleading with her.
Jada smirked as she replied.
"Oh yeah? Then how about this!"
The moment those words left her lips, an incomprehensible chill erupted from her body and burst outwards in all directions without restraint.
"Blizzard Landscape."
The temperature plummeted as thousands of kilometres of land turned into pure ice, with spikes tearing towards Malrik at ridiculous speeds and with immense piercing power.
Malrik’s request for her not to use the Ice Affinity only made her want to use it even more.
"Sigh... Are all Ice users stupid?"
He murmured to himself as he unconsciously remembered Stravos.
"Well, don’t blame me for not warning you."
His Astra Energy erupted as orange flames burst forth from his body. These were ordinary flames, not the ones from the Sun that he usually used. As the flames erupted, he allowed them to explode and expand outwards indiscriminately, meeting Jada’s blizzard head-on.
Boom! Boom!! Boom!!!
Various titanic explosions erupted as everything within a half-million-kilometre radius was instantly covered in mist. Sizzling sounds echoed through the surroundings as earthquakes followed. One moment, it was hot; the next, it was cold. It was as if the world itself couldn’t settle on a single temperature.
As Jada stared into the mixture of smoke and mist, Malrik appeared behind her. She immediately reacted, stabbing forward with her halberd, her weapon tearing into Malrik’s stomach.
But before she could even celebrate landing an attack, the Malrik before her vanished into a smear, revealing that he had merely been an afterimage left behind.
He was already gone.
He appeared behind her again the moment she turned towards his former position. His katana flashed, and with a gut-wrenching sound, the weapon tore through flesh as a diagonal wound appeared across Jada’s back.
A chilling wave of ice erupted from her back at point-blank range. Malrik vanished from where he stood, putting some distance between himself and the attack. Jada stopped the bleeding from her injury by covering the wound with ice.
Ever since meeting Stravos, Malrik had slowly developed a minor dislike for people with Ice abilities. He had advised Jada, but she hadn’t listened. Now, he would have to treat her the way he would have treated Stravos if Wuthenya had given him permission.
But just a little bit of course, as she wasn’t Stravos.
In a flicker, he vanished once more, his body appearing before her. His fist met her stomach before she could even comprehend what was happening. Her body shot backwards as she vomited her stomach contents.
She stretched out her hand, unleashing a wave of Ice constructs, but Malrik weaved through each of them as he closed the distance once more. His foot met Jada’s temple, changing the direction of her body from backwards to sideways.
Jada felt her consciousness flicker as she nearly lost consciousness from that kick.
She couldn’t help but curse, as she couldn’t understand why the Emperor’s plan wasn’t working. Malrik was supposed to be weaker. She was supposed to win, she was supposed to emerge triumphant, and she was supposed to become a Wargrave Killer. She was supposed to earn a Noble Rank.
Yet, here she was, getting her black ass handed to her by the man, and he wasn’t even using Astra Energy to enhance himself.
She landed on her feet as she skidded backwards, wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth while stabilising her breathing and internal injuries.
But before she could even sense Malrik’s presence, he spoke from behind her.
"I told you to use another ability. Now look what you’ve made me do to you, you beautiful Black queen."
He sighed, as he hadn’t wanted to beat up a beautiful woman. But alas, his hands and blades didn’t see gender, only a warrior willing to die for her Empire and Emperor.
Before Jada could move, Malrik stopped her by holding her down by the shoulder. His hand moved towards her elbow as he pulled with ease.
Jada immediately frowned, and before she could tap into her Ice Affinity, Malrik tore her arm from its shoulder socket without a flicker of mercy or hesitation.
Jada gritted her teeth, refusing to scream. Her Ice Affinity came alive once more, but Malrik simply suppressed it with his flames. He tore off her second arm with the same ease, then slapped the back of her head, sending her body shooting forward as blood splattered across the frozen ground.
As she ricocheted off the ground and rolled to a complete stop, she slowly and weakly sat up, her back against a tree as she looked at the stumps where her arms had once been and surveyed her battered body.
